The last of these memorable events took place in October 2022, when this photograph was captured, serving as a lasting reminder of his dedication to preserving and sharing Australia’s railway heritage.

Many will also remember Bernie’s remarkable determination during the unforgettable journey hauling four temperamental streamlined mainline locomotives and that enormous empty coal train back from the Port Augusta powerhouse for SSR, a feat documented on Railroad Australia. Watching Bernie tackle that challenging assignment with his trademark skill, professionalism, and quiet determination was something few who witnessed it will ever forget.

Bernie leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the locomotive cab. His knowledge, generosity, friendship, and unwavering commitment to the railway industry have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him or working alongside him.
